Thrifty!

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

The other thing I picked up on my thrifty adventures is this geode. Its awesomely large and insanely heavy. Like a wonderful amethyst vagina.

I’ve been on the hunt for big mineral clusters for what seems like forever. Ebay has forsaken me (those gem nerds pay a FORTUNE for these things) plus shipping these rocks can be cost prohibitive. I found a little crappy section of an even crappier vintage mall that had geodes, mineral specimens and those light up pictures of dolphins that move and make ocean sounds.

This big boy sold me and I can’t wait to incorporate it into the decor. I smell a bit of an obsession brewing…

Looks like I’m a rock hound as well as a furniture fanatic. Mineral specimens make great additions for a little vignette bling. I have to be careful though, I don’t want t to get all new-agey in here or some crap.

Thrifty!

On my single day off this week I made a quick trip to a few local thrift stores and vintage shops. I didn’t pick up much but I found a couple funky things.

Hey! Is this an awesome hand painted set of nesting dolls featuring all your favorite Soviet leaders? Oh yes.

Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Brezhnev, Stalin, and Lenin! Oh my.

Look at little grumpy Lenin. How can you refuse him?

Bench

I picked up this handmade vintage bench on recent thrifting rounds. It was a pretty surprising choice considering its a little bit more rustic than the rest of the house. I sort of instantly fell in love with the sturdiness and smooth worn finish plus all these amazing handmade details.

Heres a detail pic. Check out all those great butterfly key joints and weird rectangular plugs. I think it has a very sort of Scandinavian meets Nakashima thing going on that I’m super digging.

Now I’ve got to style that bad boy up.

At least it sort of hides the ghetto ass cable.
