Not Thrifty!

Friday, March 12th, 2010

I’ve been super grumpy this week – the non-stop rain and the fact that I found nothing on the thrifting rounds equals everything is poopy and stupid.

The main reason for this unwelcome unhappiness was a big tease of an estate sale we hit up on Sunday. I had been traveling around on Friday and Saturday and then happened upon all these pictures Sunday morning on Craigslist advertising 50% OFF at an estate sale about an hour from The Brick House. I didn’t shower. I didn’t put on make-up. I just grabbed my shoes and The Boy and ran over there…

Danish Selig sofa? Check. Price? $750. Uncheck.

Interesting mid century credenza? Check. Missing two knobs and $125. Uncheck.

Vintage Bertoia diamond chair with original yellow cover! CHECK. $75!!! CHECK. One hour too late. UNCHECK.

I drove like a mad person to get over there to grab this chair that was 50% off and had lasted throughout the sale to Sunday (obviously it was waiting for me). I truly, deeply believed it was mine, but apparently another couple picked it up an hour before we arrived. Then stormy rain clouds settled on my brain and I haven’t been able to shake the stench of disappointment off me.

Also, notice that Platner side table? GONE.

I was too cheap and too late to score. I’m still pouting like an adolescent.

I’ve been on the hunt for a new coffee table for the den for a long while. We’ve gone through multiple coffee tables (for a recap let’s time travel to here, here, here, here, here, and here.)

Most recently we used a pair of John Keal for Brown Saltman end tables (just like these on fancy 1st dibs) that worked adequately but never really made me happy.

This weekend I found a pretty beat up Eames elliptical table at this place called Foothill 5 Fifty.

This place is not for the faint of heart, well…pretty much its just plain awful. The store is seriously packed with amazing pieces of furniture (all the biggies – Eames, Nelson, Bertoia, Wegner, Nakashima, you name it they got it stuffed in there – like crazy hoarder style) but it’s almost impossible to move around and you can’t see anything. When I’m feeling particularly masochistic I tend to check it out.

Customer service? TERRIBLE. Prices? OUTRAGEOUS.

So, my little beat up table was $90. I like it, Iggy loves it, The Boy, well he’s not convinced. You gotta get low low low low low low low low

Oops.

I have another couch.

The color is much different in person than the craigslist picture led me to believe. It’s a bit of a deeper blue/gray. It is in PERFECT condition. I never really have anything in PERFECT condition. It’s nice, but scary.

I have to totally redo the den now.

I’m debating on whether I should I sell my white couch. I may have to live with this colorful sofa for a week and then decide…
