Not Thrifty!

Friday, January 1st, 2010

This is definitely Not Thrifty! but it’s sure is getting a little bit Scandinavian around here.

I had a few out of town guests stay at the old Brick House who are rabid mid century enthusiasts. So of course we headed out to Palm Springs to check out the goods.

My favorite little vintage import store JP Denmark just relocated to the Perez Art and Design enclave of stores in Cathedral City. Just The BEST little store for Danish design…but you’re going to pay for it $$$.

They are currently awaiting the big containers FULL of new-old things to arrive from overseas after the owners two month long shopping trip. What a perfect job.

$200 bucks for this shaggy rya rug. I was very tempted.

Not Thrifty!

Discovered a new vintage place called Dazzles (That name. I know. Yikes) with some pretty cute stuff at moderately reasonable prices for Palm Springs. It’s located in an old run down motel and you have to carefully weave through rooms full of some pretty funky stuff. I almost bought a large Franco Albini ottoman for $150 – now I’m regretting not getting it. Where would I put it! Really. At some point you have to say no.

Killer patio furniture and lots of lamps. I’ll be back for sure.

Pendants

Almost half a year ago I picked up this pair of trashed bubble lamps. A dealer I had been bartering with pulled them out of a house in Orange County and proceeded to poke holes in them accidentally on the trip home. They were smoke stained, beat-up and sort of wilting in his garage storage; but I thought they were pretty rad. He didn’t think he could sell them in their terrible condition so he let me take them for free and try my hand at restoring them.

Well, they never got restored. I had BIG plans, and the lamps sat and sat and sat.

I started to enjoy the weird color and tattered vintage quality. It’s what The Boy likes to say when I bring thrashed stuff home or we accidentally break something, “its character”.

For $36 I bought I couple of pendant cord kits and decided to wire them up, flaws and all.

We installed them in the master bedroom hovering over each nightstand. Lighting around the bed has been consistently on my mind and I think this pair is a good fit, especially with the glam ceiling fixture.

Now I just need to style up those nightstands…
