Craigslist

March 4th, 2009

Not to get to skeezy when it comes to hocking my crap, but I’m selling this John Keal designed
Brown Saltman table on Craigslist. Its pretty great except for a crack on the face of the drawer. Its the big occasional table (30 x 30 x 18 1/2) and heavy solid walnut with a great display area under the inset glass. On a related rant style note.

Why am I selling all my stuff?
A. I have to much.
B. The gross bathroom needs to be fixed.
C. The Boy got laid off and unemployment doesn’t pay enough to keep us renovating – or using the heater.

This economic downturn sucks.

**I haven’t gotten one email about this table (except for a scammer). Maybe its priced to high. But DUDE they are at like 3 vintage shops for around $1400- $2400. I think $150 is a steal, especially after I saw 2 smaller ones sell on Craigslist for $485 a pop. Hot damn, I will always negotiate.

Vignettes

March 3rd, 2009

I really have been considering the Eddie Ross school of vignette styling (although I’m very suspicious of it) it seems some of the basic rules are sound. Paying attention to scale, texture, pattern, and white space helps visually order things and show off the best parts of a collection. I’ve been attempting (and failing) to style the entry wall in the living room for the last year.

The top image is my current entry area “vignette”. I think I kind of dig it.

I’ve been considering a coat hanger and was thinking of the Eames Hang it All installed on the empty left side to hang coats, purses, ect. I also want to add a shelving unit behind the sofa to act as a sofa table and bookcase. If only I can find something stylish, long, and cheap…which is how I like my men… if you know what i mean…

This is when vignetting fails.

I love this marble table and was hoping to use it bedside for the Boy. The entry space in the bedroom is tight and his table needs to be small and floating to keep the room feeling as spacious as possible. First thing first – DESTROY that alarm clock. For SEVEN years he has had that ugly sticker covered monstrosity. Its like the size of a toaster.

Probably no table lamp will work. I’m going to have to do pendant lights or something wall mounted to keep the space open and symmetrical on either side of the bed. Right now the tables don’t match, the lamps don’t match, cords are askew and asunder, and we don’t have a headboard. It looks a hot mess. After all that is figured – I guess something simple, clean and with clear accent pieces will make it all come together. I hope.

The den is brown and crowded. Ugh. Eventually this will get some awesome vignetting and color action when the space planning issue works out. This pic solves the mystery of where the old coffee table ended up. The table is way to big and will be sold when I find the right perfectly priced white oval tulip base coffee table…or maybe a naked gold lady holding up a piece of glass.

Thrifty!

March 2nd, 2009

Oh NO.
I’ve been thrifting and shopping around for deals.

This blue lamp was found in Palm Springs at Angel View Thrift. I had to fix the socket/wiring and it needs a new shade…but otherwise it is lovely.

This is a reproduction of a vintage Vornado fan that I found in a small vintage shop in Beaumont. Works great and is surprisingly heavy and completely made of metal. Good deal for $20.

These are not vintage – but are part of the Dwell Studio for Target bedding line. I found the pair on clearance for $6.24 a pop. Love that green.

My first globe – now I know where I am! Found it at the Salvation Army and I think it looks fabulous in the office.

I got this little jewelery stand at the Hemet Hospice Thrift.
I’ve been looking for something like this for awhile now and have been dreaming about the one at Urban Outfitters.

I added it to the bedroom dresser since that is where I tend to stash a lot of the jewelery I wear everyday.

*In a related note – I’m trying to learn how to do the whole “vignette” thing (in the style of Eddie Ross) but I suck. Obviously this “vignette” needs more books and a plant…or good god a flower arrangement. That style of curating stuff just feels so CLUTTERED to me sometimes. I don’t necessarily want every surface in my house covered with CRAP even though I’m such a collector of it. I like that styling in pictures but I don’t know if I can realistically keep up with all the dusting and arranging. Like who stacks 20 magazines facing backwards for style and scale? What if I want to read one…I have to pull apart my artfully curated stack and wedge it out? That just does not seem functional. My modernist tendencies might win this vignette battle.

Anywho, thinking about blank surfaces, here’s a nice little marble and brass table from the Cathedral City vintage shop Modern Spaces. Its heavy!

Well, this is either a tablecloth or a blanket. I’m not sure which…but I love the groovy plaid. Hemet Hospice Thrift for $2. Awesome.
